Alexandra Schor

Day of the Dead
The family gathers
To celebrate the sweetness of life,
The sadness of death.
Candles and incense burn.
Pictures of loved ones
To honor the dead.
Sugar skulls with brightly colored icing,
glitter, and foil
are placed on the altar.
The smell of vanilla fills the air.
Light bounces off the sequins.
Under a table, children eating sugar skulls.

Elaborate altars built for this day.
An arch of sugarcane and marigolds,
passage between life and death.
